How to Prepare for the VCP Exam

Obtaining the VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certification is an excellent way to prove your knowledge in the field of virtualization technologies and accelerate your career in the IT industry. The VCP exam assesses your knowledge of VMware products, virtualization concepts, and practical skills. As I have already passed 3 VCP exams, I would like to share with you my experience on how to prepare for the VCP exam.

Requirements

Each IT exam has its own requirements that must be met.

I recently passed the VMware Cloud Professional Exam (2V0-33.22) and got the VCP VMware Cloud 2023 certification, so let’s take this exam as an example to explain the requirements.

As you can see, there are few options to choose.

If you do not have any VCP certification, you must attend in one of the trainings and pass the qualifying exam. Some courses are free.

If you have a VCP on any track with version 2020 or later, you do not need to attend training. Passing the qualifying exam is the only requirement.

And the last option, if you are already VCP-VMC 2022 certified, you just need to attend the training.

In this way, you can familiarize yourself with the requirements of each exam you want to pass in order to get certified.

Preparation

In this section, I will discuss some points that I believe are the most important when preparing for the exam:

1. Exam guide

Each VMware exam includes a comprehensive exam guide. In the exam guide, you will find all the products, sections and topics that can be included in the exam. There are also sample questions. Make sure you read the exam guide as you will know what to study, what the exam looks like and what the passing score is.

2. Prerequisite Course

VMware requires candidates to complete an official VMware authorized course as a prerequisite for the VCP certification. Ensure that you have successfully finished the required training before attempting the exam. Visit the VMware website to find the specific course(s) you need to complete based on the VCP certification you are pursuing. After completing the course, you should have the necessary knowledge to take the exam.

3. Familiarity with VMware Products

The VCP exam focuses on VMware products and their functionalities. It is crucial to have a solid understanding of VMware vSphere, vCenter Server, ESXi, vSAN, NSX, and other related technologies. Gain practical experience by working with these products in a lab environment or real-world scenarios.

4. Knowledge of Virtualization Concepts

A strong foundation in virtualization concepts is essential for the VCP exam. Familiarize yourself with key virtualization principles such as hypervisor technology, virtual machine deployment and management, storage and networking virtualization, and high availability.

5. Hands-on Experience

The VCP exam is designed to assess practical skills, so hands-on experience with VMware products is highly recommended. Set up a lab environment using VMware Workstation or other virtualization software and practice performing various tasks, such as installing, configuring, and managing virtual machines, networks, and storage. If you do not have your own lab environment, use VMware Hands-On Labs.

6. Study Resources

Gather relevant study materials to support your exam preparation. These may include official VMware documentation, study guides, textbooks, online courses, practice exams, and other third-party resources. Ensure that your study materials are up-to-date and aligned with the current VCP exam objectives.
