How to Configure vMotion in VMware vSphere

VMware vMotion is a powerful feature that enables seamless live migration of virtual machines (VMs) between hosts in a VMware vSphere environment. It allows administrators to perform maintenance, load balancing, and resource optimization without any disruption to the running VMs. In this article, we will walk you through the process of configuring vMotion in VMware vSphere, ensuring a smooth and efficient virtual machine migration experience.

In this article, I will show you how to configure vMotion in VMware vSphere step by step.

Prerequisites

Before diving into the configuration process, make sure you have the following prerequisites in place:

  1. VMware vSphere infrastructure deployed and operational.
  2. Appropriate network connectivity between hosts.
  3. Shared storage (such as a SAN or NAS) accessible by all hosts involved in the vMotion process. How to Configure Shared Storage for ESXi Hosts in Home Lab
  4. Sufficient resources (CPU, memory) available on the hosts.

Configuration

1. Login to your vCenter.

2. Select ESXi host and go to Configure. Under Networking select VMkernel adapters. Click Add Networking.

2. Select VMkernel Network Adapter and click Next.

3. Choose Select and existing standard switch, then choose vSwitch and click Next.

4. In Network label type vMotion. In Enabled services select vMotion and click Next.

5. In the IPv4 settings, select Use static IPv4 settings and enter your IP with subnet. Each ESXi should have its own IP address for vMotion. Click Next.

6. At the summary page, click Finish.

7. Repeat the steps on each ESXi.

Performing vMotion

1. Right-click on a VM and choose Migrate.

2. Choose a migration type.

3. Select the ESXi you want to migrate the VM to.

4. Validate network settings. Change destination network if needed.

5. In vMotion priority click Next.

6. At the summary page click Finish.
